Many small and medium e-commerce businesses (SMB) are using anti fraud solutions provided by their payment gateways. The most popular payment gateways for the SMB offer very inexpensive services (about $10 -$20 per month) and implement a basic set of filters that include limits of transaction amount, simple velocity, some IP Geo location, IP Risk services, and AVS and CVV checks. For many merchants these services provide “some” level of protection, and for some these filters are enough protection.
One of the justifications we hear the most from SMB merchants to not adopt a “more complex” anti fraud solution, is that they don’t have the expertise nor the time to spend monitoring and performing anti fraud. They want something they can configure in a very simple manner. However simplicity of configuration doesn’t mean they should sacrifice protection. In fact, in our experience, merchants, regardless of their size, either know what they are vulnerable to, or can be easily guided to create a set of filters that work for them.
